Criminal Minds season 16 could allow writers to try riskier forms of storytelling that didn’t make sense in the final season. Shortly after the finale aired, Messer said the writers had toyed with the idea of including a format-breaking episode in the final season. But since they knew there were only 10 episodes left, they ultimately chose to play it safe.
The current plan is to produce ten episodes and to have an anthology format where each episode revolves around a singular case. This differs, of course, from the original CBS series which was largely procedural in nature.
