Release date, cast, plot, we tell you everything about a potential season 2 of Innocent on Netflix
Season 1 of Innocent (El Inocente) on Netflix ends with a big reveal, so will season 2 see the light of day? The Innocent series based on Harlan Coben’s eponymous 2005 novel is set in Spain and explores a murder investigation through different episodic perspectives.
In Innocent season 1, Mario Casas plays Mateo Vidal, a lawyer who accidentally kills a man outside a nightclub. After serving four years in prison, he secretly meets the victim’s mother, Sonia (Ana Wagener), and plays the role of her deceased son, in order to help the woman mourn. When Mateo’s girlfriend Olivia (Aura Garrido) goes missing, many characters’ pasts come together, and the mysterious suicide of a nun is at the heart of the narrative conflict.

In the Innocent Season 1 finale, Olivia’s past decisions create big problems for her and Mateo. Additionally, it is revealed that Sonia’s husband Jaime (Gonzalo de Castro) is at the head of a massive conspiracy. The final episode of the Netflix series effectively resolves all of the major subplots, but also raises questions about Mateo’s true nature as a human being. Here’s what to expect for Innocent Season 2.
Is Innocent renewed for a season 2?
Innocent season 2 has not (yet) been confirmed. As the Netflix series is not based on an existing book series, but rather a standalone novel, new episodes are unlikely to be produced. Innocent Season 1 works like a miniseries and answers any major questions viewers may have, and also provides a final glimpse into Mateo’s mind. However, it is certainly possible that Netflix will give the green light to an anthology series that explores the psychology of protagonists and/or antiheroes.
The cast of Innocent season 2: Who will play in the sequel?
Innocent Season 1 stars Alexandra Jiménez as Detective Lorena Ortiz, who could potentially be the title character in a second episode. The new episodes of the Netflix series could overlap with the first season while focusing on a whole new plot. Since Lorena’s story is tied to the Santa Catarina Residential School, her mentor, Sister Irene (Susi Sánchez), could return for Season 2 of The Innocent. It seems unlikely that the main cast from the first season will reprise their roles.
Innocent season 2 plot: What would the rest of the series be about?
Innocent Season 1 ends with the revelation that Mateo showed pity on an aspiring prison assassin but then decided to throw him over a railing to his death. The tale constantly wonders if Mario Casas’ character is naturally violent or just bad luck, and also demonstrates that Jaime’s actions are driven by his belief that Mateo is a born killer, the final image of the Netflix series suggesting he’s right. For Innocent season 2, Netflix could bring in a whole new cast for an entirely different story or potentially bring back Alexandra Jiménez as Detective Lorena Ortiz to investigate a new crime, as previously mentioned.
Innocent Season 2 air date information
Once again, it seems unlikely that Netflix will give the green light to new episodes, but the streaming platform’s subscribers could demand a new installment. If so, expect Innocent Season 2 to premiere in April or May 2022 at the earliest.
Innocent by Oriol Paulo has been available to stream on Netflix exclusively since April 30, 2021.
