The year 2019 had not been very positive for ITV in terms of period drama, and the British channel had then canceled Beecham House after its first season, then also Sanditon. However, the latter was able to attract a larger audience beyond the United Kingdom and build a solid fan base in the process. This brings us to today, almost a year and a half after its official cancellation.
The story of Charlotte will therefore finally be able to continue with a season 2 AND a season 3 of Sanditon. Two seasons were ordered together, which at the same time can reassure viewers that this time the adventure will not end so abruptly at the end of the next season.
Broadcast in 2020 on the American public channel PBS, Sanditon has undoubtedly found its audience in the United States. But to continue, therefore, PBS needed a new partner – ITV’s numbers could not justify continuing. It will therefore be the Britbox UK streaming platform that joins the adventure and becomes the new co-producer, and which will naturally now broadcast the series in England. Chez nous, Sanditon was broadcast on Chérie 25 under the title Bienvenue à Sanditon.
As a reminder, the first season of Sanditon (available on DVD) is based on the unfinished novel by Jane Austen and takes place at the beginning of the 19th century when good English society discovers the benefits of sea bathing. The Parkers then set about the head of making the peaceful village of Sanditon a fashionable seaside resort. Invited to their magnificent villa, the young Charlotte Heywood (Rose William) will discover a world where, despite appearances “very proper”, intrigues and passions are unleashed.

Writer Justin Young, who wrote 4 episodes, of season 1 will now be the lead writer for the two new seasons. Andrew Davies, who created the series, will also return to sign multiple episodes and as executive producer.
Filming for the new episodes of Sanditon is slated to take place this year around Bristol, so the cast for the series will be revealed later this year.
