Park not only sharing the same scene, but also the same shot. Ready Player One is so rich in detail that even multiple theatrical views wouldn’t be enough to capture them all.
This means that in your rush to see how many pop culture references you can spot, you might have missed how the story comes together at the end. Here is the explanation for the end of Ready Player One, with major spoilers.
HALLIDAY EASTER EGGS
After getting all three keys to unlock, Wade doesn’t win right away. Instead, he is taken to a room decorated with easter eggs in its center where Anorak offers him a contract for OASIS. It sounds like a victory, of course, but in light of the lessons learned from the previous challenges, it is another test. Wade is offered the same contract as Halliday, he intentionally makes the same mistakes to get to the end. Rejecting the offer is the only way to go.
It’s only after this decision that we discover Halliday’s true purpose and that Wade obtains the easter egg, a symbol of his journey so beautiful it spills over into the real world, stunning hero and villain alike. A certain version of Halliday then reveals why he created the program in the first place. However, despite all the reconciliations he made, OASIS was never real, and the relationships it created were therefore lacking in truth. It was only then that Wade took control of the OASIS.
Ogden Morrow confirms this. Throughout the movie, the High Five are made to believe that Kira and the missed opportunity for a romantic relationship is Halliday’s main regret, and while that certainly took a heavy toll on him it wasn’t the Rosebud who is. at the center of the story. Because of their differing OASIS aims, he was left alone and without human contact once his friendship with “Og” ended. Halliday’s whole game was preaching against it and making sure his eventual successor didn’t lose sight of those around him.
WHAT HAPPENS IN OASIS?
At the end of Ready Player One, Wade gets the girl, which in this story means a little more than normal, representing steps not to be like Halliday: he’s not afraid to take the plunge. Of course, he takes control of the OASIS anyway, and that’s where he makes the essential, self-sufficient decision to share control with the rest of his “clan,” the High Five. He went from literally naming himself after the knight who tried to find the Holy Grail solo, to understanding the value of friendship and support.
The High Five work to make OASIS more harmonious and to make it a force for good in the real world as well as an escape from it. The biggest impact is the Tuesday / Thursday rule, where two days a week the entire simulation is closed. From a logistical standpoint, this is going to be a nightmare. The general implication, of course, is that the future is bright. Balance has been found in society and Halliday’s mistakes have been learned by the new generation and atoned for by Og treated with the respect he deserves.
EXPLANATION OF THE END OF READY PLAYER ONE
The biggest question left at the end of Ready Player One, however, exists outside of the real world. Before Halliday leaves Wade at the climax of the movie, the successor asks his creator what exactly he is: He’s not an avatar, so is he an NPC or something more? All “Halliday” says is, yeah, the real version of him is dead.
In light of the previous footage’s emphasis on reality being real, there is an inevitable subjective truth here, but the implication of even raising the possibility leaves viewers wondering if there is anything more. Did Halliday upload his consciousness to OASIS so he could live forever? If so, it makes his uplifting story all the more tragic.
He is in an endless existence where he is unable to correct the mistakes in his life and truly live. If Ready Player One were to have a sequel, this common thread would certainly be drawn. We tell you all about the release of Ready Player Two!
