It’s been a lot to take in, but we’re here to analyze the ending and understand what it means for the future of the American Nightmare universe. So here is the explanation for the end of American Nightmare 5!
EXPLANATION OF THE END OF AMERICAN NIGHTMARE 5
In the final battle of American Nightmare 5, tribal leader Chicago leads our group of heroes to the Mexican border, as the two sides arm to fight. Ever since the group killed his mother earlier in the movie, the white supremacist and Purge Dalton and his small army of allies have pursued our heroes to the border. Cornered, the good guys have no choice but to stop fleeing and defend themselves.
During the massive shootout that ensues, Chicago leads Cassie and the other survivors through while Juan, Adela, and Dylan do their best to repel the assault. A few minutes later, Dalton and another Purger corner Adela and Dylan, and they seem to have the upper hand. As it is almost too late, Juan uses Chekov’s lasso in a final brave moment to save his wife before bringing down Dalton with a bullet to the head.
The other heroes manage to cross the border unharmed and are even greeted with heartening news. Cassie’s delivery was a success, and Dylan is rewarded for his racist remarks and questionable character with a beautiful new baby. All’s well that ends well, at least for Juan and Adela, as they’ve finally made it home.
At the very end of American Nightmare 5, we are treated to a surprisingly optimistic ending for a “Purge” movie. All those who deserve to be saved make it out unharmed and cross the Mexican border. Cassie has a healthy baby and survives raising the child. Juan and Adela are going home, and for them, it’s the happiest ending of all, because they don’t have to go back to America. But if you look at the “once great” nation, you begin to see the cynical side of the movie.
The final shot zooms out to show the United States of America on fire. Radio messages suggest that there is a conflict and that people are starting to defend themselves against their attackers. The future of the United States remains ambiguous, but the extremists who organized this great purge are still here and continue to kill and destroy. In that sense, the ending of American Nightmare 5 is also extremely bleak and leaves audiences uncertain about the future of the franchise.
THE IMPORTANCE OF BORDERS
American Nightmare 5’s last explicit political message is a call for empathy to imagine that you are someone else. The Americans’ visit to Mexico is a symbol of this theme, and the ending suggests that Canada and Mexico have provided enough aid to American refugees so that they can begin to reclaim their fallen country.
