EXPLANATION OF THE END OF EVANGELION: 3.0 + 1.0 THRICE UPON A TIME
At the end of Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, desperate, Asuka removes her eye patch and unleashes the power of the 9th angel. It is immediately discovered, however, that this is exactly what Gendou intended for her to accomplish. Unit 13 activates and destroys Unit 02. The Shikinami Series Original appears in front of her, revealing that Asuka is a clone.
The Original asserts that the shape of the last EVA or Unit 13 reflects that of God and asks Asuka to join it. In a final act of resistance, Asuka attempts to blow herself up with her DSS Chocker but is assimilated by Unit 13. Gendou has revealed to have merged with the Key of Nebuchadnezzar and appears to have transcended humanity. Ultimately, it’s up to Shinji to defeat his father and prevent the Fourth Impact.
He travels with Mari, with Misato’s permission, to confront his father. When he dials Unit 01, he discovers his father within Unit 13 in the Anti-Universe, where human senses have been rendered worthless. As a result, the LCL has manifested a virtual environment that Shinji and Gendou can perceive. As space and time are made immaterial, their struggle is not limited by either of the two. He even takes them into other continuities of Evangelion.
As they fight, Shinji continues to try to appease his father. He eventually succeeds and also helps Asuka, Rei, and Kaworu. Meanwhile, Misato sacrifices herself by preventing further impact. Shinji decides to establish a world without Evangelions and is ready to die for it.
His mother Yui appears just as he and Eva 01 are going to be impaled by Cassius and Longinus’ spears. Turns out she has always been a part of him. Yui and Gendou, inside Units 01 and 13, respectively, voluntarily lay down their lives to make their son’s dream come true. EVAs return to their animal and human form, and the world returns to normal.
At the end of Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, the audience sees Asuka, Rei, and Kaworu waiting for a train. Shinji, now an adult, is sitting on one of the benches. Mari comes up behind him and, as she has done before, asks him to guess who it is. This time he’s right.
She then helps him remove the Choker. As they walk outside the station, the scene suddenly turns into action. This means that Shinji has arrived in the real world with his buddies in his search for a world free of EVAs. EVAs do not exist in this world, and Shinji and his friends can finally find peace.
