The Chair is a series about politics and personal relationships set within the English department at the prestigious and traditional University of Pembroke. This dramatic comedy consists of just six half-hour episodes, all of which air tomorrow.
While the storytelling economy, led by showrunner Amanda Peet, who co-created the series with college writer Annie Julia Wyman, is commendable, I could easily have watched at least four more episodes. This ironic and observant portrait of academics tasked with preparing young adults for a useful life, makes you wish the semester would extend a little longer. NETFLIX THE CHAIR SEASON 1 END EXPLANATION
Amid the closing scenes, we also see Ji-Yoon engrossed in her usual class, telling us that she was not kicked out of college despite the scathing reports about her attempt to silence the students. She explains to her department that the dean and other members of the university administration wanted her to “go.”
But that they didn’t want a wrongful dismissal lawsuit on their hands, so they didn’t fire her. However, due to his own department’s vote, Ji-Yoon loses her position as head of the English department. Things aren’t that bad and, as Bill points out, she looks a lot calmer and happier now that she’s back in teaching and no longer has to take care of everything. other stressful tasks related to the position of department chair.
It also subtly ties in with the moment when Ji-Yoon’s father told Bill that she was meant to be a teacher since she was a child and that no one could change her mind. It seems Ji-Yoon is a teacher at heart and she’s really in her element when teaching. Even the students, otherwise skeptical of her announcements, seem appeased and engrossed in her class as she teaches.
BILL AND JI-YOON END TOGETHER?
The chemistry between Bill and Ji-Yoon is beyond doubt, and the two have sparked sparks on several occasions. They are longtime friends and seem extremely comfortable with each other, whether it’s wrestling in Ji-Yoon’s office or sharing a stealthy joint over a college dinner. Ji-Yoon also speaks fondly of Bill’s last wife.
However, the one time Bill makes advances to her, Ji-Yoon refuses to move forward and states that no one will take her seriously as the new president if she is seen in a relationship with a professor in her department.
Just before Bill’s hearing, they kiss but argue soon after when Bill realizes Ji-Yoon intends to fire him. The series ends with a loving conversation between the two but without a further hint of their relationship. However, since Ji-Yoon’s position as president held her back, a relationship between the two could now flourish.
Bill hasn’t even been his co-worker since he was fired, and he’s been extremely nice to his daughter Ju Ju, which suggests that they might get together soon.
