EXPLANATION OF THE END OF WHAT IF EPISODE 8 ON DISNEY PLUS
Clint dies in an explosion that wipes out all of Ultron’s sentries. Natasha survives and is likely to be recruited by the Observer to stop Ultron. The scene underlines the bond between the two Avengers and also gives Natasha additional motivation to continue her fight against Ultron.
In the episode, the Guardian repeats that no matter what, he cannot interfere with the natural course of things in the universe because he is sworn to observe only events. As Ultron reaches a new level of sensitivity and discovers the existence of the multiverse.
The Guardian exclaims that this event is an anomaly that is not meant to be happening. Ultron attacks the Guardian, and their epic battle unfolds across multiple realities, Ultron blaming the Guardian for not intervening despite the suffering of many worlds.
The Guardian is brought to his knees by Ultron’s powers but manages to deliver a decisive blow to his foe that allows him to escape. He teleports into the reality of Strange Supreme, which had been destroyed by the magician’s selfish desires. The Guardian and Strange Supreme both realize that the former must step in as billions of lives across the multiverse are at stake.
What If Episode 8 ends with the Guardian asking Strange for help. This implies that the Guardian is ready to break the oath he has held for so long. His fight with Ultron makes him realize that the fate of the multiverse is at stake. Therefore, although he initially refused to intervene, he decides to break his oath. The Watcher asks Strange for help and hints that the cosmic being will gather the heroes of the multiverse to stop Ultron.
