In addition to being entertaining, fiction based on real events is instructive. This is the case with The Billion Dollar Code, the new miniseries from Netflix which will be available exclusively in a very short time.
This week, Netflix takes us back to the 90s, to the beginnings of the digital world. At the time, the rules of the game weren’t predefined and it was okay to be the first to create a program or software worth millions of dollars.
THE BILLION-DOLLAR CODE: THE STORY OF TWO GERMAN BROTHERS AGAINST GOOGLE
To create The Billion Dollar Code, Olivier Ziegenbalg and Robert Thalheim relied on the true story of the Winklevoss brothers, who would be the creators of the algorithm behind Google Earth.
German inventors created 1994 Terravision and fought for years to be recognized as the owners of the algorithm used in Google Earth. ART + COM has even gone so far as to sue Google, accusing the giant of patent infringement.
Indeed, the system of Google Earth has very strong similarities with the algorithm invented by the two brothers, leaving no doubt about the true origin of the code constituting the application which is now used by millions of people daily.
Their story in The Billion Dollar Code is told from the perspective of the losers, in this case, that of the two Winklevoss brothers, who potentially lost millions of dollars that they could have made from their code.
The miniseries immerses us in the depths and baseness of the means used to make the internet giants their velvet place in the early days of it all when no rules yet existed and anything was possible.
In an interview with the German site SerienJunkies.de, the showrunner of the series expressed his enthusiasm for this mini-series project: “As a filmmaker, you always want to find this truly incredible story that has never been told. . And suddenly there she is. And those who recounted it had no idea how big it was. ”
He added: “Because the great thing is that Terravision’s story is not only about inventors and their incredible fight for justice, but also about the whole internet age and the digitalization of the world. our world, from the naive beginnings to what it has become today. ”
