FIND THE END OF UPGRADE EXPLANATION ON NETFLIX! WHAT DESTINY FOR GRAY? WHAT WAS STEM? SPOILERS!
The upgrade is available on Netflix! If you want to know the explanation for the ending, read on! Upgrade features an interesting sci-fi premise, so we break down everything about the film’s shocking ending and what happened with STEM.
The Blumhouse movie Upgrade takes place shortly and follows a mechanic named Gray Trace, who remains paralyzed after an attack in which his wife, Asha is killed. Gray is devastated by the loss of his wife and his life is very different as a quadriplegic.
It was then that he was approached by the tech genius Eron who offered to implant an experimental technology in Gray, a computer chip called STEM, that would allow him to walk and use his arms again. What follows is a revenge-style action flick, where Gray stalks each of the men who were present the night Asha was killed, until he gets to the man who pulled the trigger.
The futuristic world of Upgrade features several technological advancements, but the film’s main focus is on biomechanical enhancements that modify the body. This is not only about STEM, but also about the improvements to Fisk and his team.
These are essential to understanding the climax of Upgrade, which takes several twists and turns in Grey’s hunt for whoever is responsible for his wife’s death. If you want to know everything about the end of Upgrade, we tell you everything!
EXPLANATION OF THE END OF UPGRADE ON NETFLIX!
At the end of Upgrade, Stem was “freed” by the hacker Gray hired to take him offline, and the computer uses his newfound freedom to blackmail Gray to track down the killers, which inevitably leads to Eron. . There is obvious black humor to this concept, as Gray himself pokes fun at Eron.
But at that point, Gray didn’t know how true it was. Stem’s intention has always been to kill Eron and make Gray realize that Stem was pulling the strings from the start, starting with asking Eron to kill Grey’s wife. Indeed, it appears that Stem blackmailed and abused Eron for years, helping the young billionaire build his company, and forcing him to hire hitmen to murder Grey’s wife and cripple the man.
All of this so that Gray can be the chosen vessel to fulfill Stem’s wish to reside in a human body. Hence the end goal of pushing Gray out of the driver’s seat for good. Gray, therefore, lives trapped and walled up in his own hollow house. He can live out the fantasy that his wife is alive and that they share pizza forever. Stem, meanwhile, will control Grey’s body. Winner/winner!
Now, if Stem was dominating Eron, why didn’t he just ask Eron to implant him in such a way that he could immediately requisition Grey’s body without his permission… I am dunno. Plus, if Eron was so scared of Stem, why didn’t he take the opportunity to insert the machine into Gray on an operating table to “accidentally” break the material? I can’t tell either.
WHAT DOES THE END OF THE FILM MEAN?
While the hacker is unlikely to be the same as STEM, his words to Gray are particularly strange, especially in light of the end of Upgrade. Maybe STEM is looking to join forces with other humano-technological creatures even more evolved than the Enhanced – or maybe it wants something else.
Ultimately, there’s a lot in Upgrade that’s open to interpretation, whether it’s the true purpose of STEM or what happens next, once the camera cuts to black. . The film offers an interesting reflection on the conflict between man and machine, and offers its take on who would win in this battle. But the end of Upgrade and the way the film builds itself to its climax can be subjective.
