EXPLANATION OF THE END OF BOOKS OF BLOOD
In the movie, the stories of Bennett and Jenna are also translated into the flesh of Simon. The two are linked, not only by their deaths but also by the fact that they both have blood on their hands. We know Bennett is some kind of hitman, but it’s only at the end of Books Of Blood that we learn that Jenna isn’t exactly a victim. She played a role in the death of her boyfriend.
We see her encourage him to jump out of a building while assuring him that she is about to do the same. But she’s not on a ledge, she’s in bed cheering him on. Now she can’t live with the guilt for what she did.
Throughout the movie, she says it would be easier to die than to live the way she does. She has isolated herself from the world around her, wearing headphones so as not to hear any sounds. That’s why Jenna decides to return to this bed and breakfast where the owners turn humans into vegetables.
The couple found a way to keep people from dying alone by keeping them, not exactly alive, but like zombies, within their walls, and under the floor. They believe they are freeing their victims from pain and grief, and that’s what Jenna wants. His decision to let the couple preserve her allows her to finally rest, but she is also stuck in purgatory.
Simon is also trapped. He is forced to endure the pain of trauma from other people over and over again. Her skin will forever tell the true story of the dead, including that of Jenna, whose story is certainly not what it seemed. The movie’s surprise is that Jenna isn’t our final daughter, but rather a villain from a different story that might not have been written if the Book of Blood hadn’t been discovered.
“We all die,” Mary says in the opening of the movie, “but sometimes the stories of our passing are so shocking that they must be etched forever in our collective memory.” After seeing Books Of Blood, the stories of Jenna, Bennett, and Miles will be hard to forget.
The stories of Jenna, Miles, and Bennett have all been told, but the dead still have unread pages, indicating that more stories from Books Of Blood may one day reach audiences who are still waiting to be scared.
