EXPLANATION OF THE END OF WE COULDN’T BECOME ADULTS
At the end of We Couldn’t Become Adults, Sato realizes that he has been stuck in the past throughout his life. He also realizes that all of his friends and ex-lovers suffer as adults and that their issues often overlap. Sato begins to see similarities in their stories.
He concludes that even Kaori is ordinary after all. Knowing that he and his friends couldn’t grow up to be emotionally strong and responsible adults, Sato finally faces the truth about his identity and his self-loathing.
After this epiphany moment, Sato seems more optimistic. He realizes that he cannot continue to rehash the sorrows of his past and must embrace the present instead.
In addition, he becomes more empathetic, able to understand the motives behind the actions of those who have hurt him. Sato will likely abandon his current lifestyle to embrace something more satisfying, perhaps writing a novel.
WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS EX?
Sato realizes that Kaori has happily settled into family life with a spouse and a child when he checks her Facebook account. He then realizes that Kaori too has become, or always has been, ordinary.
After Sanai’s arrest, Sato is unable to reach Su because her number no longer exists. It appears that the police arrested Su and all the other girls illegally working for Sanai. Unable to contact Sato safely, Su had to end their relationship.
Megumi, for one, quits Sato because the uncertainty in their relationship is too much for her to endure. We also know that Sato had an affair with Megumi’s party dancer. So it’s no surprise that Megumi decides to leave Sato’s residence for her own good.
