IS THE RICARDOS BASED ON A TRUE STORY?
Yes, Being the Ricardos is based on true events. Rena Vale, a Hollywood writer, attended a class for new members at an address she later identified as Lucille Ball’s home in 1937 to support the Communist Party. According to Boston Public Library records, Rena gave testimony before the United States House of Representatives Committee on Un-American Operations in 1940 and reaffirmed her statement in 1942.
Then, in 1953, Lucille voluntarily managed to meet with HUAC investigator William A. Wheeler to give sealed testimony that joining the Communist Party was not her idea, but rather that of her socialist grandfather. She stated that she had “no intention of voting as a communist.” His testimony is then forwarded to J. Edgar Hoover.
The scandal that has erupted as a result of this investigation is critical. Sorkin was permitted to continue the plot by Lucie, Lucille, and Desi’s daughter. The story remains a timely look back at Lucille Ball’s career.
