The high-stakes plot, combined with its incredible cast, is enough to get our adrenaline pumping, but it also begs the question: Is 355 based on a true story?

IS IT INSPIRED BY A TRUE STORY? 355
No, the plot of 355 is not based on a true story. However, the title of the movie may be inspired by a true story. Simon Kinberg directed the movie, which he co-wrote with Theresa Rebeck.
The title is based on the eponymous Agent 355, who may or may not have existed in history. She is a female American Patriots agent who may have worked during the Revolutionary War. Although her true identity is unknown, she could have been a member of the Culper Ring spy ring, which was put together by Benjamin Tallmadge and General George Washington. It is only mentioned once, in a letter written by Culper Ring leader Abraham Woodhull.
Woodhull most likely recruited her as a result of this letter. Historians are perplexed by the lack of critical information needed to determine the identity of the spy. Some suspect Anna Strong, Woodhull’s next-door neighbor, while others suspect Sarah Horton Townsend and Elizabeth Burgin. The code indicates that she was of some social importance.
At the same time, some believe that the code refers to a woman who was not an official member of the network rather than an agent (but who assisted in operations). Regardless, the mysterious agent has become ingrained in popular culture as a rebellious feminist icon of her time.
