It was inevitable that a major character would die in the Yellowjackets season 1 finale on Showtime this weekend. What character would it be, but how would they die, was the question.
We were taken aback when we discovered who had left: Jackie. This isn’t someone we expected to be removed from the equation so quickly. She was so crucial to the early episodes of this show that, while we expected her to be gone, we didn’t expect her to be killed so soon.
Her death, however, may play a role in exacerbating some of the tension and tribalism that exists in the wilderness. We’ve already seen how the group grows crazier and crazier as time goes on, and we’re beginning to wonder if Lottie will become the “Antler Queen,” the person who appears to be controlling a section of the group through bizarre rituals and masks.

It’s without a doubt heartbreaking how it happened: after a fight with Shauna, she went out into the cold, never to return. She died as a result of no one being able to make amends. It was an unnecessary death, which is part of what made it so terrible — and why Shauna is holding on to some of her pain in the way she is.
In the end, we have to assume that there will be a few more unexpected deaths in the coming years. In the seasons to come, there will be a lot of different twists and turns to this story, assuming the show is able to air for that long. After all, there was a plan in place from the start to keep things going for several seasons.
