The second episode of Euphoria season 2 had a lot of questions, and many of them were about Nate at the start of the episode. We know he lived, but we also saw that strange dream sequence in which he might have a “perfect” future. Much of it implies that he could be in love with Cassie, and we already know that these two characters will be spending a lot of time together.
Is Nate, on the other hand, a fan of Sydney Sweeney’s character? Is he capable of such a thought? This is someone who has done such heinous things and has clearly been harmed by his family and upbringing.
It makes perfect sense to go to the man behind the role for some perspective on all of this. Here’s what Jacob Elordi had to say about the Nate sequence, Cassie, and his character’s thoughts on love in general in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:
I believe he simply has this primal, “American Dream” idea of having a very straightforward, white picket fence, beautiful blonde life in his head. He doesn’t have a concept of love or family. This is a traditional storybook concept for him. And I believe he’s doing what you’re saying, attempting to persuade himself that “This is right in front of me.” This is a lovely young lady. She is devoted to me. I have complete command over her. This has to be the definition of love.” Because that’s what he’s good at. I’m convinced he has no idea what love is the entire time. His mother despises him. His father despises him. He is despised by his peers. He has no idea what true love entails. So he’s just doing his best to make sense of it.
This season has the potential to teach Nate a lot about himself. Will he be a better person as a result of it? That’s difficult to say, given that Euphoria isn’t really a show about healing.
