INSPIRED BY A TRUE STORY, IS THE GIRL FROM PLAINVILLE?
True, The Girl from Plainville is based on an actual incident. The miniseries, which co-creators Liz Hannah and Patrick Macmanus describe as a “fair” portrayal, is based on Jesse Barron’s reporting. Conrad Roy III’s shocking circumstances of death made headlines and stunned the world. The 18-year-old died of carbon monoxide poisoning on July 13, 2014. The series includes heartbreaking details from the true story, such as Conrad II, the boy’s father, calling his mother Lynn to inform her that “there is yellow tape surrounding our son’s truck.” Although Michelle Carter and Conrad conversed on the day of his death, no recordings of their conversations have been discovered. Michelle’s message to her friend Samantha Boardman, on the other hand, piqued authorities’ interest because it sounded suspiciously like a confession.
The Girl from Plainville vividly depicts the emotionally harrowing journey of everyone involved in the tragedy. Additionally, the story delves into the subsequent trial, during which Michelle was found guilty of being a juvenile delinquent in juvenile court. In 2017, she was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to prison. Michelle was released in January 2020 after serving more than 11 months of her 15-month sentence at Bristol County Reformatory.
Naturally, despite its factual portrayal, The Girl from Plainville dramatizes certain elements of the story (which it clearly mentions at the start of each episode). The Girl from Plainville is based on true events. Despite the story’s fringe dramatization, the fact that it is based on a journalistic report ensures that it covers the majority of the publically known real events.
