We’ll admit that we’re little ways removed from the episode and yet we’re still perplexed — extremely perplexed! It’s difficult not to be, given how long ago this character died.
Why would she reappear now, and why did she not plan a revenge tour on Reddington’s behalf shortly after her alleged “death”?
The possibility of Kaplan remaining alive was raised tonight by the man who created Reddington’s one-of-a-kind safe, which was designed to hold the recordings he intended to give to Liz in the event of his own demise.
As it turns out, Kaplan went in and requested another identical safe. James Spader’s character was unaware of this, and someone maneuvered the safe in such a way that no one noticed, inserting the replacement like a magic trick.
When did Reddington make these recordings? Was Kaplan aware of the nature of her search? Perhaps she did not. It is possible that she is not even in the safe that is being moved.
She may have obtained a replacement years ago, and another party may be carrying out a plan now. Kaplan herself lacked a compelling reason to assassinate Liz, whom she had previously assisted in concealment.
She could easily assassinate Reddington prior to her, but how would she know to hire Vandyke? Another point to consider.
To summarize, this is one of the most exciting and perplexing twists in the show’s history.
