Billy the Kid is one of the most enduring figures of the Old West, even though he was assassinated rather unceremoniously at the age of 21.
Since then, his legend has spread throughout the media, from dime novels that first romanticized him to Epix’s new eight-part origin story, the first three episodes of which premiered on May 24, 2022.
It suffers from one of the most ill-advised premieres in recent memory, but it matures alongside Billy into a respectable if overly familiar Western.
However, that premiere. It is bookended by its only interesting scene, in which a more mature Billy confronts a bounty hunter who is attempting to cash in on the price on his head, but the remainder of “The Immigrants” plays out like a sped-up version of 1883.
Billy (as a child, played by Jonah Collier) escapes the slums of New York with his Irish mother, Kathleen (Eileen O’Higgins), his father, and his brother, Joe (Leif Nystrom), via the rickety wagons of a one-eyed horseman.
Swollen rivers destroy their convoy and carry away all their worldly possessions, errant shots from horse thieves kill their companions, and McCarty Senior sinks into a deep depression. Within a short period, young Billy has lost everything – and almost everyone – he cares about.
Billy telescopes up into Tom Blyth midway through the second episode, a much more compelling figure shaped by his experiences, which include every man they meet in the intervening five years attempting to rape his mother.
While Kathleen works herself to death and Joe hacks his lungs open with tuberculosis, Billy becomes involved with gambling dens, cattle rustling, and just a conspiracy explained to him by a journalist called Ash Upson (Ryan Kennedy) about several secret cabals known as “rings” puppeteering the frontier’s development.
Much of this version of Billy the Kid is based on true events, albeit with some necessary changes. The Santa Fe Ring was a real group of attorneys and land speculators who gained considerable influence and fortune through political corruption and fraudulent land deals, and much of Billy’s story has been filtered through this lens, with numerous incidents for which Billy is famous – such as the attempted burglary of a Chinese laundry and a prison break – being framed as punishment for his relationship with Upson.
The point is obviously to portray Billy as a sympathetic figure who is driven to wrongdoing by his circumstances, and while one may quibble with the historical accuracy of that approach, it results in a more interesting, sympathetic protagonist. It remains to be seen how the show’s exploration of secret societies will mesh with its story of Billy’s transformation into an outlaw, but it isn’t a bad idea.
However, Billy the Kid is not exactly flush with good ideas. The majority of them are borrowed from elsewhere, and even five years later, it feels as if it’s cantering across the very well-worn ground.
Blyth is effective as the stoic youngster hardened by great loss and adversity, but he is developing into a stereotypical cowboy, with little to distinguish him. Subsequent episodes will need to delve deeply into his reluctance as an outlaw, as well as how that contrasts with his abilities as a gunman, to create a character compelling and idiosyncratic enough to live up to his lofty legend.
