Carey Williams and screenwriter KD Davila expanded their self-titled 2018 short into a feature-length comedy-thriller that bridges genres while delivering powerful social commentary. We tell you everything if you want to know if Emergency is based on a true story!

IS EMERGENCY INSPIRATION FROM A TRUE STORY?
No, the plot of Emergency is not based on a true story. The movie is based on a short movie of the same name, which was directed and written by Carey Williams and KD Dávila, respectively.
While the original short ends with the trio of friends discovering the girl unconscious, the feature uses the scene as an inciting incident and advances the plot.
During an interview, director Carey Williams revealed that he wanted to deepen Kunle and Sean’s relationship by turning the short into a feature.
He wanted to investigate their opposing worldviews as well as the nuances and complexities of their friendship. He also wanted to investigate the impact of an incident on which they differed and how it would affect their relationship.
Screenwriter KD Dávila, on the other hand, stated that when adapting the short movie into a feature film, she decided to approach it as a social story, emphasizing the impact of colorism in our society.
Furthermore, the screenwriter was inspired by Mr. Williams’ personal experiences as an African American.
She consulted him for story and scene ideas, which she combined with the director’s real-life experiences. Williams also revealed that the movie is about racial prejudice and how black men are constantly forced to defend themselves.
Finally, Emergency is a fictional story based on the creators’ real-life experiences. It is rooted in the real-world conflicts that black men face daily.
