IN STRANGER THINGS, WHO IS 001?
Hawkins is harassed by a new entity from the upside-down at the start of Season 4. Dustin names her Vecna after the evil wizard of the same name in the Dungeons and Dragons fantasy role-playing game because the way she kills her victims resembles magic.
Vecna is later revealed to be 001, Dr. Martin Brenner’s first test subject at Hawkins Laboratory.
His given name was Henry Creel, and he was the son of Victor Creel. Henry moved to Hawkins with his parents, Victor and Virginia, and his sister Alice sometime after WWII.
Their first month in their new home was joyful, but things quickly deteriorated. Animal carcasses began to appear around the house. Alice, Virginia, and Victor began having terrifying visions one after the other.
Alice was murdered while Victor was trapped in one of his visions. He believed Henry was also dead, and that it was all the work of a demon. Authorities concluded Victor was responsible for the murders and committed him to Pennhurst Asylum, where he has remained ever since.
Henry’s life has taken on new significance. He came to see human rules as a deeply unnatural structure and resolved to demolish them all. His abilities aided him in this task.
After that, Brenner entered his life, and Henry became One. Brenner eventually realized Henry was a monster and implanted a device called Soteria in his neck, which neutralized his powers. 001 later worked as a medical assistant in the lab.
Eleven kidnapped him after he told her about Soteria. This allowed 001 to reclaim his abilities. He then went on a killing spree, killing guards, nurses, and several other test subjects.
Eleven fought and defeated 1 after realizing what she had unleashed on the world. She opened a door behind the scenes and directed one of them there. This then collided with the Mind Flayer, transforming into Vecna.
