“Ben & Jody,” directed by Angga Dwimas Sasongko, is a continuation of the lives of the friends from the movie “Filosofi Kofi,” written by Dee Lestari and directed by Angga Dwimas Sasongko. “Filosofi Kofi” was more concerned with the characters’ coffee principles and their ambitions to open a cafe.
As a sequel to that movie, “Ben & Jody” focused on their hometown and the bonds that drew them back to fight for it. They serve coffee in a variety of settings, remaining true to their roots. However, the emphasis is on other issues. It was first released in Indonesia on January 27th, 2022, and then on Netflix on June 9th, 2022.
Ben & Jody Plot – What Is the Story About? Spoilers follow!
Ben organizes a nonviolent protest to save his village’s land, which is home to a coffee plantation. While they waited for good news, police raided their home and assaulted them. Injured, the villagers retreat to obtain medicine and cabs for transportation, and Ben is kidnapped.
Jody becomes concerned when Ben fails to arrive in the city on time, so he returns to their hometown to inquire about Ben’s whereabouts. Jody discovers an entire conspiracy behind the company that is taking over the villages after arriving there. Ben and Jody both work hard to get out of the scheme. After an epic car chase, they eventually overthrow the illegal thugs hired by the company and return home.

Mr. Hasan, did you betray them?
Ben is kidnapped after setting out on his own to find a cab to take the remaining villagers home. He walks the streets with his friend Jody, and when he disconnects to take a video, he is confronted with an altercation that results in his phone capturing the video and him being transported to a car.
Mr. Hasan finds his cellphone by chance and gives it to Jodi as a sign of assistance when Jody returns to town to look for his friend. Jody tries to unlock Ben’s phone only to discover a video of the fight. He looks for the people in the video and discusses it with Hasan.
While Jody is thinking about Ben’s disappearance, he comes across two boys who resemble the ones in the video. Jody immediately follows them, only to be apprehended and imprisoned alongside Ben and other villagers.
They escaped a few days later, while the abductors were preoccupied with an international soccer match between China and Indonesia. Jody and Ben manage to flee the pursuing abductors, but Jody is injured and Ben drags him towards the river so that they can reach the town.
However, they are apprehended by a tribe living near the river. The tribe can assist Jody and revive him. They discover that the tribe is the family of one of the remaining captured villagers. They return to the camp to save the other villagers.
When Ben and Jody arrive at the camp, they discover that Hasan, whom they had trusted, has betrayed them. Hasan was responsible for the police raid and Ben’s kidnapping.
It is clear that when Jody showed Hasan the video of Ben being kidnapped, Hasan may have tipped off the two guys to show their faces to Jody to entice him to the camp. Hasan was the reason the cops didn’t do anything to help Jody or their friends.
Hasan had joined the company to scare the villagers into accepting their offers. He was sick of fighting for nothing and had joined the enemy forces. Hassan intended to kidnap Ben to scare the other villagers into submission and not question the decision.
His plans, however, were foiled, and he instead lost his brother, the lead kidnapper, in a fight between the tribe as well as Ben and Jody, who had come to save the remaining villagers. But that doesn’t change the fact that Hasan devised the entire plot and that his brother simply carried out his orders.
Is Ben Dead? – Ben & Jody Ending Explained
To say the least, their return to camp was eventful. The acting leader of the tribe and her sister gathered some of the warriors and marched toward the center, retracing Ben and Jody’s steps.
When the warriors arrived at the base, they quickly dealt with some enemies. They infiltrated the camp quietly but quickly and freed the villagers. Because the leader and her sister had to fight Hasan’s brother, the other warriors dealing with the enemy remained behind, while the first car drove away with the villagers.
Jody rushed to assist the leader, only to be shot by Hasan, and Ben arrived to assist them, only to be shot himself. Ben shoots Hasan’s brother while lying down. Ben and the others boarded the other car with a gun wound, the goons pursuing them. Jody attempted to keep Ben awake and prevent him from succumbing to his injuries.
The others concentrated on repelling the thugs. They drove at breakneck speed to get to the community hospital. Ben manages to stay awake until they arrive at the hospital. Ben is immediately carted away to be properly medicated. He survives, but it is unclear whether they will return to the city or remain in the city to prevent the company from devouring the remaining villages.
Hasan is returned to the camp, along with his brother and the other goons who have already been knocked out. Hasan betrayed his best friends, even shooting one of them down.
His brother’s death as a result of following his orders served as cinematic justice for everything they had done wrong. Ben and Jody made it out alive, if not unscathed. Jody had a change of heart and decided to stay instead of returning to their city coffee shop to fight against the wrongful capture of the villages. Ben joined Jody because he was the first to organize nonviolent protests to aid the villagers.
“Ben & Jody” has an uncanny resemblance to reality. The fact that movies are rightfully defined as a mirror of society has been demonstrated time and again through movies.
The Indonesian movie industry is focusing more on events in their country and exposing wrongdoing. The companies that caused the upheavals in the various small towns, only to relocate the residents deep into the forest with next to nothing, were portrayed as the raw truth.
The movie also shines a light on corrupt officials who work solely for personal gain. Most officials are more concerned with their own pockets than with the citizens. Despite the grim image, the film shines a light on people who are willing to fight for justice.
These people are typically silenced and overpowered, and their voices are not heard. Because if their voices were heard, the corrupted system would be overthrown and crushed by the rest of the citizens seeking justice. “Ben & Jody’s” ending highlights historical instances where those who eventually overturned the system and justice were served.
Ben, Jody, as well as the rest of the villagers finally got their cinematic justice by fighting back and fending off the goons to flee. The movie concludes on a happy note, with the best friends reuniting with their other friends and the villagers receiving housing.
