Stranger Things has evolved over the course of four seasons, with the final episode expanding the scope far beyond Hawkins, introducing the show’s most compelling villain yet, and boasting special effects that rival those of blockbusters. If water can flow under bridges for us, it can also flow under bridges for our heroes.
Indeed, we are facing a time jump at the start of Stranger Things Season 4, and a lot has changed. Especially with the break between Max and Lucas, but why?
WHY ARE MAX AND LUCAS PARTING WAYS?
It is implied that Max feels guilty for surviving and wishes she could go back in time and swap places with Billy.
Although Lucas expresses a desire to be there for Max, he lacks a frame of reference to help him understand and contextualize his feelings and the changes in his life.
While everything seemed to be going well between them at the end of Stranger Things Season 3, grief can take time to fully manifest, and many of the changes in Max’s life were just getting started at the time.
Lucas demonstrates that he, too, underwent significant changes during the season break and appears to be at a crossroads in his life.
Changes in Lucas’ life are also likely to contribute to Max and Lucas’ breakup. He expresses a desire for popularity and has discovered a new passion in basketball, as well as new teammates.
While it’s understandable that he’s focusing on himself during such a formative period, Max may feel left out or trapped in the time his half-brother died, as Lucas looks ahead and tries to move forward.
Lucas has frequently been described as a problem solver, which may cause friction between the two of them: grief is not something that can be resolved.
Max isn’t going to simply find new meaning in his life and move on from Billy’s death. This is something she will have to adjust to and internalize.
While the fate of the Stranger Things characters is unknown, the events that led to Max and Lucas’ breakup are natural and logical.
