The Essex Serpent’s final episode is only a week away, signaling the show’s premature end. The final chapter prepares the series for an exciting, action-packed conclusion.
Cora’s two love interests are now out of reach, and the villagers of Aldwinter are being slaughtered one by one, either as a result of illness or the suspected prehistoric monster that haunts their waters. Here’s what happened in The Essex Serpent’s fifth episode:
The townspeople look for Naomi, while the Ransomes pack for London. Stella is in desperate need of a diagnosis because she is now coughing up blood.
Cora is sulking in bed after the aftermath of her birthday party. Martha piques her interest by mentioning the fossil found. She displays her discovery to the archaeological society, which requests more specimens. Cora vents her rage on Martha, the servant, and the two argue.
Stella is diagnosed with tuberculosis after visiting Luke in London. She refuses radical treatment and agrees to let Will take the kids to the National History Museum before they return home. Will has an awkward exchange with Cora at the museum.
Cora is still heartbroken and sobbing at home. She tries to make amends with Martha, and they travel to the slums in the hopes of persuading Charles Ambrose to effect some social change in government.
Luke is horrified by the living conditions in the slums, claiming that there is hazardous gas in the air, vermin on the ground, and cholera all around them. Martha is persuasive, and Charles promises to bring the issue up in Parliament.
Cora shows her support for Luke at a special party in his honor. Luke proposes to her after they get drunk. Luke develops a vile streak after she laughs it off. The doctor brings up her feelings for Will and Stella’s illness. Cora is offended and argues again, but this time she storms off.
At home, she destroys her late husband’s vase before destroying the house, smashing mirrors and ripping fabric from the walls. Meanwhile, Luke is robbed and stabbed in the operating hand by a thief.
Will constructs a fire and speaks to it, renounces God and all his sins. He wishes Cora could be returned to him. The vicar is losing his faith as well as his grasp on reality.

Cora may finally decide on her plans for love, life, and career. Hopefully, she makes the correct decision, but it’s a difficult one for the widow to make.
