EXPLAINED ENDING OF DARK WINDS SEASON 1
Whitover uses foul language toward Anna at the end of Season 1 of Dark Winds, which is overheard by her father, Guy, as Chee considers shooting or taking him into custody.
Whitover is killed instantly when he is shot. Bernadette arrives just in time to assist Chee in concealing the murder by dragging Whitover’s body and money into the cave and blowing it up. Because James Tso is not prepared for this, he abandons Leaphorn and commits suicide.
We find out a few months later that the deal has been completed, but Leaphorn still has a few issues to work out. Chee returns to his home, intending to rebuild it after leaving the FBI.
Chee does not tell Leaphorn about Guy when he asks him what happened in the cave.
Chee mentioned Nakai and the money in his report, but both have since vanished. This implies that Nakai did not die when Whitover shot him. He fled with the money, most likely through an undiscovered exit from the cave.
The first reason James Tso murdered Hosteen was to obtain Father Benjamin’s cover. Hosteen could have figured it out, which would have caused him problems.

Another reason could be that James was sent to boarding school, where he was abused in the name of “civilization.”
He expected his family to protect him, but they instead sent him home. It was this rage that he directed at Hosteen.
He did not murder Anna. She died as a result of Ada’s dark magic. The white streak in the girl’s hair proves it.
