IS THE STORY BEHIND CALL ME BY YOUR NAME REAL?
Call Me by Your Name is not a true story, so no. It is an adaptation of André Aciman’s 2007 novel of the same name, which received acclaim from critics and admiration from readers all over the world.
This well-known book’s script was written by James Ivory, and director Luca Guadagnino later adapted it for the big screen.
Despite being a product of Aciman’s imagination, the tale was influenced by his time growing up in Egypt and Italy.
Aciman claimed that one summer while working on a different book, he had an instantaneous vision of an Italian seaside villa that he had modeled after a Claude Monet painting.
Then, to take his mind off the task at hand, he began experimenting with this idea through a series of scribbles.
Surprisingly, this diversion soon evolved into a serious literary endeavor as he started to fall in love with the Elio and Oliver characters.
Aciman unintentionally kept thinking back to his family’s beach house in Egypt and his trips to Tuscany while he was writing.
In a December 2017 interview with the same publication, Luca Guadagnino echoed Aciman’s remarks and disclosed that Elio’s character transports him back to his adolescence. Here is where you can find out how the book and movie end.
Call Me by Your Name is a poetic, relatable ode to the glorious confusion of first love and what it means to mature, even though it isn’t based on a true story.
