EPISODE 1: WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?
Chainsaw Man Episode 1 serves as a hook for a story as complete as a premiere can be, and it accomplishes this through Denji’s characterization.
His motivations aren’t particularly unique, and it’s the simplicity of his situation that makes him amusing. He only wants money and a simple life with the girl he loves.
His teenage dreams are dashed by a mountain of Yakuza debts accumulated by his late father, and the work to pay them off never seems to be enough.
Even with the assistance of his only friend, a chainsaw demon named Pochita, he still has a long way to go.
These eccentricities are also played out directly as if they were commonplace in a world similar to our own.
There’s something undeniably amusing about a world where a character like Pochita exists and is taken seriously, but the episode rarely makes you laugh.
